Jesus no doubt meets the elders, is greeted warmly, and continues to walk into Jericho. At this point the scene takes an unexpected turn. Before formal invitations from the elders can be uttered, Jesus stops, he looks up into the sycamore tree behind the crowd, and he calls Zacchaeus by name. “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today” (Luke 19:5). These are words no one expected to hear. We should not underestimate the shock this has on the crowd. People
